Electronic Data Interchange refers to a broad range of functions that enable your customers and/or suppliers
to electronically transmit Purchase Orders, Shipping Information, and Invoices. There are basically 3 levels of functionality that we are concerned with when we discuss EDI.
DATA TRANSFER The data can be sent and received through many basic software packages from a WAN
(Wide Area Network) such as GEIS or ORDERNET that are used by JC Penney, or directly from SEARS' own network when you contact SEARS.
Of course, we are showing our age by using Sears as an example since Sears now uses a commercial network, but you get the idea. The data is transmitted and received in an ANSI standard format.
TRANSLATION AS/AP provides a direct translation capability which eliminates the need for any
additional software or involvement of any other vendors. Alternately, you may choose the TSI translator, which is our preferred option, as a third party package.
INTEGRATION Once the data is received and translated into an ASCII format file, it can be integrated
into your application. This involves writing a program that takes the ASCII file produced by the TRANSLATION software and converts the data into FoxPro (dBase) format files.
As part of this step, we may, or may NOT add the data to the AS/AP Accounting System based on the clients' requirements and the nature of the data.
